Professor David Thorburn

David Thorburn is an NHMRC Principal Research Fellow at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. His research focuses on improving diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mitochondrial energy generation disorders, which comprise over 300 different single-gene disorders, more than 20 of which his group discovered. He has had a long standing interest in enabling families affected by mitochondrial DNA mutations to access reproductive options such as prenatal diagnosis and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis. As Chair of the Mito Foundation Scientific and Medical Advisory Panel he has been an advocate for legalising mitochondrial donation to reduce the risk of transmission of pathogenic mtDNA mutations.
